Police say a clerk who apparently recognized a buddy arrested in the back of a Miramar police car denied service to the officer when he tried to buy a drink at the gas station.
The fallout has included a call for a national boycott, the firing of the clerk and a corporate apology.
According to an incident report, the officer was denied service at about 2 p.m. Sunday at the Sunoco gas station, 1700 S. Douglas Road.
As the officer grabbed a cold Gatorade from the refrigerated case, the clerk told the officer, "Y'all got my boy in the back of that car outside the gas station." He asked why his "boy" had been arrested, the report said.
The officer, who was in uniform, said he couldn't give him further information, then walked toward the cashier's window, where that same clerk returned to ring up customers.
The cashier's window was closed and the officer knocked on it to get the clerk's attention, asking to be rung up. The clerk told him no, the report said; when pressed by the officer, the clerk said: "You know why."
The officer again asked to make a purchase and the clerk refused a second time telling him to get out of the way so he could ring up other customers. The clerk served about four customers before the officer made a final, futile attempt.
When the officer, identified as Matias Wilson, asked the clerk for his and his manager's names, the clerk refused to give him the information. The clerk was not wearing a name tag.
When asked why he'd refused to provide the officer service, he replied: "Because I don't have to, that's why," the report said.
Wilson had not made the arrest of the clerk's "boy," police said, but the officer who did was also stopped at the gas station in a separate police vehicle when Wilson went inside for a drink. The person in custody was a 22-year-old accused of speeding in a nearby neighborhood, resisting arrest without violence and driving without a valid driver's license.
