The move will allow the despot to bypass parliament in passing new laws. He can also suspend rights and freedoms as he deems necessary.

But at a press conference tonight, Erdogan insisted the move was fully in line with Turkey's constitution and did not violate the rule of law.

He made his announcement in front of government ministers after a meeting of the National Security Council that lasted nearly five hours.

Erdogan said the move was needed "in order to remove swiftly all the elements of the terrorist organisation involved in the coup attempt".

He has repeatedly claimed moderate cleric Fethullah Gulen orchestrated the attempted coup on Friday, even though Gulen lives in the US.

Gulen denies the allegation and has condemned the uprising, saying: "Government should be won through free and fair elections, not force."
