This picture is going viral today.
Media is pitching it as an "iconic picture". The lone protester standing up against the force of the evil militaristic police. But you know what I see when I look at it, after having seen many other pics like it? Protesters who know they have nothing to fear from the police, even when blocking the road and breaking the law, because the police play by the rule of law. And police who know they must protect themselves, even from the people they try to protect. As the past week has showed, police have no such reassurance that they will not be attacked or shot at. Over the weekend, police were attacked by 'protesters' in multiple cities, including a cop having his teeth knocked out in Baton Rouge and another getting his vertebrae broken by a BLM 'protester' dropping a concrete block on his head from a bridge.
Here's another picture. One that didn't go viral, one that still only has local coverage in Dallas. To me, it's as captivating a photographic image, and a more striking moral picture. Freelance photgrapher Robert Moore who was on the scene in Dallas to take pictures of the Black Lives Matter protest was caught up in the middle of the shooting. An officer who goes nameless protected him and shielded him behind a police car for two hours and then continued to protect him when it was safe to leave as they backed out of the area.
"I've never been in a situation where one of the people was serving me so directly and watching out for me," Moore told ABC News today. "How do you thank somebody like that?"
Moore captured the moment while he was pinned against the car with the Dallas police officer.
