Former Army Reservist Micah Xavier Johnson went to Afghanistan as a “gung-ho” patriot, but returned a sullen “hermit” obsessed with the black power movement, his parents said in their first interview since their son murdered five police officers in Dallas last week.

As a kid, Johnson actually wanted to be a police officer and was enthusiastic about enlisting in the Army, mom Delphine Johnson told The Blaze.

“He loved his country,” she said. “He wanted to protect his country.”

But somehow, when Johnson came home after seven months in Afghanistan in 2013-14, much about the young reservist had changed drastically, according to his mom.
