A Maryville woman says two American flags were set on fire and destroyed this week in front of her home, making other neighbors in the community nervous.

This whole ordeal is very unsettling the woman and her son, DeWayne K. Phillips. However, he doesn’t know if this is a personal attack.

“Why, why her flag, I don’t understand why, it’s a 79 year old woman she wouldn’t hurt a fly,” said Phillips.

And what makes matters worse, this happened twice this week.

“We think it’s kids that possibly don’t know any better. Why?” said Phillips.

The flags have since been replaced by the local American Legion Post 13, the Maryville Police Department and other community members.

The front of their home now has 20 flags.

“We got to show that we can’t let that happen around here, or anywhere,” said Charlie Walton, with the American Legion post.
