Young scouts are being encouraged to lead healthier lifestyles with the introduction of a new 'anti-fat' badge.
The Scouts have introduced the health and fitness activity badge for Beaver Scouts, aged 6 to 8, after leaders became concerned some of their youngest recruits were not keeping up with outdoor activities because they are unfit.
Youngest trying to earn their badge have to take part in three agility activities, such as an obstacle course, slalom relay, hula hooping, skipping, crab football or an egg and spoon race.
They also have to learn about healthy eating and prepare a nutritious snack for themselves as well as promote living well to others, either by designing a poster or acting out a sketch.
So far, around 4,000 children across the country have tried out the activities for the badge, which has the picture of an apple with a heart inside it and is described informally as an 'anti-fat-and-lazy badge'.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, James Stuttard, who developed the badge, said: 'Being active and adventurous is part of what Scouts do … but child obesity is one of the big challenges for young people this century.'
