A pro-Islamic State Twitter account is warning of attacks at Heathrow, Los Angeles International and New York Kennedy airports during the July 4 weekend, according to an organisation that monitors extremist websites.

The account reportedly said that attacks would be carried out on planes "flying from Heathrow to the US" and warned that "there will be a device placed in either [sic] Heathrow, LAX or JFK airports."

The claims could not be immediately verified but come at a time of heightened alert, following the attack on Istanbul's Ataturk Airport this week, and a major holiday weekend in the US.

The threat was spotted by the Site Intelligence Group, which tracks the online activity of terrorist groups.

Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, transport minister, called for the public to be cautious.
