The previous estimate of transgender adults in the United States has jumped to 1.4 million, new federal and state data shows. The number—though double the amount previously thought—still makes up only 0.6 percent of the adult population. Younger adults were more likely than older ones to identify as transgender, researchers say. In particular, those between the ages of 18-24 were most likely, based on a growing social awareness. The executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality, Mara Keisling, predicted that those numbers will continue to rise as more societal changes are implemented.
