Democratic Rep. Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania was found guilty on 23 charges in a corruption case over an illegal $1 million campaign loan Tuesday.

The House member, who was elected to represent a district covering large portions of Philadelphia in 1995, was convicted of money laundering, fraud and racketeering, the Associated Press reports. The former member of the House Appropriations Committee was routing federal grants and nonprofit funding to pay his debt.

He lost his primary race to retain his seat earlier this year to state Rep. Dwight Evans.

According to the AP, Fattah racked up a large amount of debt during his failed mayoral campaign in 2007.

He remains free on bail and will be sentenced on Oct. 4.
