Cox — a member of the opposition Labour Party — was attacked in broad daylight shortly before 1 p.m. in Birstall, not far from the city of Leeds.
A man has been arrested in relation to the incident, police added.
Both NBC News’ U.K. partner ITV News and the BBC said Cox had been shot and stabbed.
Her husband posted a photo with no caption on Twitter of a smiling Cox along the river where the two have a houseboat.

The Labour MP Jo Cox has died after being shot and stabbed multiple times after a constituency meeting.
Armed officers responded to the attack near a library in Birstall, West Yorkshire, on Thursday afternoon. A 52-year-old man was arrested in the area, police confirmed. The suspect was named locally as Tommy Mair.
Police added that Cox, the MP for Batley and Spen, had suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at 1.48pm on Thursday by a doctor with paramedics at the scene.
