Via LA Times:

Authorities in Santa Monica found possible explosives as well as assault rifles and ammunition in the car of a man who told them he was in town for the L.A. Pride festival in West Hollywood, a law enforcement source said.

Early Sunday, there was a call to Santa Monica police of a suspected prowler near Olympic Boulevard and 11th Street. Patrol officers responded and encountered an individual who told officers he was waiting for a friend. That led officers to inspect the car and find several weapons and a lot of ammunition as well as tannerite, an ingredient that could be used to create a pipe bomb.

The car had Indiana plates. He did make comments that he was in town for the pride event in West Hllywood this weekend. Sources said they did not know of any connection between the gay nightclub shooting in Orlando, Fla., early Sunday morning and the Santa Monica incident, and the investigation has been taken over by FBI.

The parade comes hours after the attack at the Orlando club that killed 50 people. At least 53 were injured in the deadliest shooting in American history after a gunman took hostages. The gunman has been identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, a U.S. law enforcement official said.

Checked his Facebook, there does not appear to be a relation to Islamic terrorism there.

Here’s his last post:

Howell was arrested in October for pulling a gun on neighbors. This report on his arrest also suggests he is gay:

The officers said that the other complainants and witness stories were consistent and none seemed intoxicated. Two of them referred to an incident earlier in the day in which Howell had pointed his gun at his boyfriend. A report was taken after this incident as well.

“James is going to get someone hurt,” one witness said. “He needs to stop pointing guns at people.”

The witness, who only heard the incident because she was inside her home at the time, told police that she first heard yelling from outside and then turned down her television, at which point she said she heard a male voice say, “I will shoot you.” She said she walked outside to ask the others what was happening.

We were correct, he is gay or at least has a boyfriend.

“Wow. I just can’t believe it,” Howell’s friend and former co-worker Cary Goodman told the Daily News on Sunday night. “I worked with him until probably a month ago. He seemed like he was a pretty good person.”

Goodman said that Howell mentioned he had a male partner, so he was surpirsed police said he might have been targeting the Pride event to cause harm.

“He had a partner, yes. I don’t know what his partner looked like. He never showed me a picture of him or anything,” he said.

Goodman said that Howell had lost the job at Clarcor, where they worked together, but got a new one driving a forklift for another company in Indiana.

Interestingly, the LA Times cited aspects of the original article that we cited, the News And Tribune,in which he is noted as ‘point gun at his boyfriend’, yet the LA Times initially failed in their story to note the likelihood he was gay. They just added it now.
