When President Barack Obama commuted the sentences of 42 federal prisoners Friday, he freed a man who had previously been convicted of manslaughter in the shooting death of his mother-in-law.

Sherman Ray Meirovitz, 73, was serving a life sentence for attempting to purchase two kilograms of cocaine from two undercover agents in 1988. The commutation will allow Meirovitz to leave prison on June 3, 2017, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press reports.

According to Meirovitz’s appeal, he got “the maximum sentence because of his substantial criminal record which included a history of drug-dealing and the shooting death of his mother-in-law.”
