One person was killed when a U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet crashed Thursday afternoon in Smyrna, Tennessee, according to a local official.
The Tennessean reported that the jet crashed around 3 p.m. local time after taking off on a practice flight. Larry Farley, the Rutherford County fire chief, said his dispatchers were informed that one person died in the crash. A spokesman for the Navy said the crash involved a Blue Angels jet.
The pilot’s identity and further information about injuries in the crash was not immediately available. It was unclear if the individual who was killed was the pilot or an onlooker. However, NBC News reported later Thursday evening that a pilot with the Navy’s Blue Angels squadron was believed to have been killed in the crash.
