Bill Clinton scorned Republican attacks on his wife and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, invoking conspiracy theories that dogged his presidency.

“Now, I know the Republicans have been mean to her. They say terrible things. You gotta respect them. They’re good at this. They delegitimize the people they don’t like,” Bill Clinton said at a campaign event in North Dakota Friday.
“You think the stuff they say about her is bad? They accused me of murder,” Clinton said.

Clinton seemed to be referring to conspiracy theories surrounding the apparent suicide of White House adviser Vince Foster in the early months of his presidency.

“They aren’t in the habit of attacking people they aren’t scared of. They try to sucker-punch the rest of us into nominating people they think they can really devour if they get a hold of them,” Clinton said. “It’s what they do! I wish they’d quit. I wish they wouldn’t. It’s not good for America.”
