SHOTS have been fired outside the Australian Embassy in Baghdad, with one person reportedly dead.

The Australian Government confirmed a shooting has taken place.

However Seven News said the status of the victim was unknown.

Media reports are also emerging that a sniper targeted soldiers and officers in he al-Latifiyah area south of Baghdad.

The identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed.

It has also been reported the victim was reportedly a security contractor.
