A suspect in the shooting of a Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy shot himself in front of investigators at a Tempe apartment, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

The 51-year-old man died. His name has not been released.

“This is turning out to be a very bizarre investigation,” Arpaio said in a news conference Wednesday morning.

Arpaio said the man is suspected of shooting Deputy Bryan Wisda about four hours after being pulled over by another deputy during a DUI task force.

Wisda was shot by someone in a passing vehicle after stopping a driver for a suspected DUI near Price Road and University Drive in Tempe early Saturday morning. Arpaio said Wisda thought the vehicle looked like a Cadillac.

The investigation led authorities to an apartment complex near Loop 101 and University Drive where they spotted the Cadillac Tuesday night. Three detectives went inside an apartment and talked to a man. Arpaio said that man pulled out a rifle and killed himself.

“I’m glad he killed himself and didn’t kill our deputies, I have to give him credit for that,” Arpaio said.

A SWAT team was called to the scene after the shooting because it wasn’t clear if anyone else was in the residence. A robot was sent in to check the apartment.

Arpaio said the man’s roommate fled but later was detained for questioning. Investigators do not believe he was involved in Wisda’s shooting.

The sheriff said there were weapons inside the apartment. Two cars were towed from the apartment complex Wednesday morning.

“We feel, not a hundred percent, but we feel we may have the right guy,” Arpaio said. He said there is still an open investigation to see if anyone else was involved.

Arpaio said the suspect had been pulled over by another deputy during a DUI task force a few hours before Wisda was shot. He was taken to the DUI command center where he was processed, his vehicle was taken away and he was sent home in a cab. Arpaio said that suspect later drove by in a different vehicle and shot Wisda multiple times.[…]

Arpaio said he would not take back his previous comments calling the suspect a “scum bag” and a “coward.” He said the man had a criminal record.

“When I went public the first time and I generated maybe some controversy when I said there’s a war on cops, I think this personifies what I’m talking about,” Arpaio said.
