A new low for disrespecting our military and veterans.
“Trump’s gonna keep you busy when he’s commander in chief,” Jon Stewart joked to a hangar full of military service members at Joint Base Andrews on Thursday evening. “You’re going to have to repaint all the planes with ‘TRUMP’ in big gold letters. You’re going to be busy.”
The former “Daily Show” host, who drew big laughs with the joke, was the emcee for a comedy show that celebrated Military Appreciation Month and the 75th anniversary of the USO, a private nonprofit that supports the U.S. military’s 1.3 million active-duty service members with, among other things, live entertainment.
President Obama, Vice President Biden and their wives were also present, all dressed in black and effusive in their praise for the military.[…]
David Letterman, sporting a robust and brambly retirement beard, made a special appearance to introduce an elaborate birthday cake for the USO.
I’m “happy to be out of the house,” said Letterman, who ended his run on “The Late Show” last year. “I had a funny thing happen to me: A fellow came up to me before the show and he said, ‘We love what you do, we love your writing, we love what you mean to the country, we love your poetry.’ And I said, ‘Who do you think I am?’ And he said, ‘Walt Whitman.’ “[…]
The actual comedy show that followed Stewart and Letterman was closed to the media. Scheduled performers included director-producer Judd Apatow, “Daily Show” alumni Hasan Minhaj and Kristen Schaal, and stand-up comic Jeff Ross, who has toured with the USO to nine countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan.
“You are in store tonight for what will be . . . the best show in the United States tonight,” Letterman said in closing. “Except maybe ‘Hamilton.'”
