Cash is going to become more representative of the Americans who are more likely to depend on it, now that the faces of several black icons are set to appear on American paper currency.
Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced Wednesday that Harriet Tubman will replace President Jackson on the $20 bill. Sojourner Truth, the black abolitionist and early advocate of women’s rights, will appear on the back of the $10 bill, and the back of the $5 bill will include Marian Anderson, the black singer, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
King argued that racial equality was not simply a matter of equality before the law, but also a question of meaningful economic opportunity. Today, African Americans are more likely to pay in cash than other racial groups, a result of persistent racial disparities in the U.S. economy. Black consumers execute 40 percent of their transactions in cash, according to the Federal Reserve. By contrast, white consumers pay in cash in just 26 percent of transactions.
