Amsterdam’s main airport was partly evacuated Tuesday night after a “suspicious man” was arrested and a bomb disposal unit was deployed to the site, a police spokesman said.
“We got a call from someone at the airport saying there is a suspicious man. He was arrested,” said Alfred Ellwanger, a spokesman for the Dutch police.
He said police couldn’t yet confirm whether any explosives were found in the man’s luggage, as the bomb squad was still conducting the investigation.
Witnesses at Schiphol airport posted pictures and videos on social media from the evacuation and with the bomb disposal robot deployed on the site.
Mr. Ellwanger said the police intervention didn’t affect flights and that the airport activities were also continuing as per normal, outside the secure perimeter.
A spokeswoman for Schiphol airport confirmed that all incoming and outgoing flights were sticking to schedule Tuesday night.
The bomb alert at Schiphol airport comes three weeks after the terrorist attacks at Brussels airport and a subway stop in the Belgian capital, which killed 32 people and injured over 340.
