A former advisor to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s erstwhile presidential campaign wants conservatives to rally around Texas Sen. Ted Cruz now that his favorite has exited the GOP presidential primary.
“It’s time for all Rubio supporters — and all conservatives — to unite around @TedCruz,” Avik Roy, a healthcare policy expert who joined Rubio after working with former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, tweeted on Tuesday night.
The tweet came just minutes before Gov. John Kasich won his home state of Ohio, which allocated 66 delegates. “I may go into the convention before all this is over with more delegates than anyone else,” Kasich told CNN during a phone interview.
It’s mathematically impossible for Kasich to clinch the nomination before the convention due to his lack of victories up to this point, but he could theoretically overtake Donald Trump if he united the entire anti-Trump movement.
But Roy’s endorsement suggests that the intellectual elite of the conservative movement are more inclined to back Cruz than the more moderate Kasich.
