In a photo report purportedly released by the Islamic State, ISIS flogs an accused thief instead of applying the sharia law mandated “hand cutting” in “Wilayat al-Furat,” Syria. The caption along with the above photo as released by ISIS reads:

“Strengthening the thief, cannot apply the hand cutting punishment in the city of Inah.”

It is not explained why ISIS is unable to chop off the alleged thief’s hand.

Under sharia law, a convicted thief must get their hand amputated. The punishment of hand amputation falls under the “hudud” punishment of sharia law, as it is viewed as a crime against God. “Hudud” means “boundaries” in Arabic. Most hudud crimes fall under the category of “sex crimes,” such as adultery, fornication, accusing someone of illicit sex, etc.
