With the South Carolina Democratic Primary just three weeks away, a notable figure was campaigning for Bernie Sanders on Saturday in Columbia.
Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner of New York City, made several stops in the Capital City. Erica’s father died in 2014 after being placed in a chokehold by NYPD officers who were arresting him.
Video of the arrest sparked national outrage but a grand jury did not return any indictments against the officer involved. On Saturday Erica Garner voiced her support for Sanders conveying her believe that he will speak out for African Americans on both economic and social issues.
“The fact that he’s for us. He’s for Black Lives Matter,” Garner said, “He’s a protestor, his whole record is him protesting and putting his body on the line and getting arrested for us.”
Garner said she’s still fiercely fighting to have her father’s case reopened and reconsidered by a new grand jury in New York State.
Meanwhile the Sanders campaign is planning a number of phone banks to bolster efforts here in South Carolina over the next few weeks. The Democratic Primary in the Palmetto State will be on February
27, 2016.
