Former President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday that if he had to choose, he’d pick Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over rival Ted Cruz, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

At a lecture in Britain’s House of Lords on Wednesday, Carter was asked to give his “assessment” of American politics.

After talking about his own victory in the 1976 Democratic presidential caucuses, he went on to say that Trump would be a better option than Cruz.

If he had to choose between them, “I think I would choose Trump, which may surprise some of you,” he said.

“The reason is, Trump has proven already he’s completely malleable,” Carter said. “I don’t think he has any fixed (positions) he’d go the White House and fight for. On the other hand, Ted Cruz is not malleable. He has far right-wing policies he’d pursue if he became president.”
