Hillary has him on the short list for the Hispanic vote.
Via The Hill:
The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce plans on endorsing Housing Secretary Julian Castro for vice president, according to a report from Politico.
“Millions of people living in this country look to Julian as the gatekeeper of American dream,” said Javier Palomarez, the group’s president and CEO.
“[We are] happily endorsing him for the vice presidency,” he continued. “We’ve grown to know him. We’ve seen him in action and feel very comfortable endorsing him.”
Palomarez said the organization is not yet endorsing a presidential candidate even though Castro is backing of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
“I’m not saying I’m not a fan of Hillary’s, but we’re not prepared yet to endorse any one of the presidential candidates,” he said.
“I’ve had conversations with other candidates running for the presidency and they’re [interested in adding Castro to their ticket]. We should wait and see how things land.”
Palomarez said that the group’s backing does not change its aim of nonpartisanship on behalf of Hispanic business interests.
“I would feel very sorry for the Republican who came to complain to me about choosing one side over the other,” he said, noting Castro’s Democratic affiliation. “We have a proven track record of working with both sides.”
Castro endorsed Clinton last October during an event in San Antonio, where he once served as the city’s mayor.
