Five people have been killed and several injured by a gunman who opened fire at a school in an aboriginal community in the remote far north of Canada.

Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, described the shooting at La Loche Community School as “every parent’s worst nightmare”. He said that two more were injured when the gunman – who was later arrested – opened fire.

“I ran outside the school,” said Noel Desjarlais, a tenth grade student.

There was lots of screaming, there was about six, seven shots before I got outside. I believe there was more shots by the time I did get out.”

Around 900 students, from pre-kindergarten to Grade 12, attend the school.
And shocked residents of the lakeside town of 2,600 were asking how the type of violence so common south of the border in America could come to their isolated community, 500 miles north of Edmonton.
