Following the arrest of a man on a slew of charges ranging from gun possession to assault and battery, a Midlands sheriff has made a strong statement on gun control laws and this country’s treatment of those who violate them.

On December 19, 2015 Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 34-year-old Leon Crosby of Columbia and charged him with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine within proximity to a school, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine within proximity to a school, simple possession of marijuana, felon in possession of a firearm and assault and battery (3rd degree).[…]

Following a lawful search of Crosby’s vehicle, deputies found a .22 caliber revolver that was loaded, an additional bag of suspected crack cocaine and a quantity of marijuana, the sheriff said. He was placed under arrest.

Crosby is no stranger to law enforcement, Matthews said. He has previously been arrested for criminal domestic violence, murder, and narcotics charges, according to the sheriff. In 2015, he was arrested in Richland County for possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine. Crosby was out on bond on the Richland County gun and drug charges when he was arrested in Kershaw County, according to Matthews.

“Crosby’s arrest in Kershaw County brings up some interesting points.” Matthews said. “A condition of most bonds is that the suspect not re-offend. Crosby clearly did, so his bond in Richland County should be revoked and he should not be released on bond in Kershaw County.”

“We have gun laws already on the books that address felons in possession of firearms,” Matthews continued. “Those laws don’t seem to be much of a deterrent if violent felons who carry guns are not locked up when they are caught and kept in jail, We don’t need more gun control laws. We need to drop the hammer on those who violate the gun laws we already have in place.”

Crosby remains in the Kershaw County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
