On the heels of yet another controversial week, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump was back in South Carolina.
Trump took part in his third town hall meeting here in the Palmetto State speaking to voters at USC Aiken.
Based on the turnout at the forum, it doesn’t appear Trump’s popularity is dwindling at all. Even after making those hotly contested statements that Muslims should be temporarily banned from travel into the US.
Trump’s temporary ban came in response to the recent terrorist shooting that happened in San Bernardino just ten days ago. The comments drew sharp response from leaders across the nation, including South Carolina governor Nikki Haley.
However, at the forum Trump made it clear that he’s not backing down.
“I think a lot of good things are going to happen but we have to be tough,” Trump said. “We can’t be so politically correct. And that’s the way it is.”
Applause came from the thousands of Trump supporters that packed the convocation center at U-S-C Aiken. The auditorium was easily filled by the time the forum started at noontime and was moderated by state attorney general Alan Wilson.
Trump would also use his time to take aim at President Obama and the Democratic Presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton. For over an hour he challenged Obama’s actions on everything from the Affordable Care Act to the economy and immigration reform.
Trump also spoke out in great support of gun owner’s rights. He shared his view that if more weapons were present in Paris and California during the recent terrorist attacks, there would have been fewer victims.
Several people, however, were at the forum today that are fiercely against Trump. Several yelled out during the town hall and were escorted out of the building by police.
Jabril Hough, from the Islamic Center of Charlotte, said he was appalled to hear the remarks from Trump about Muslims. He was one of the protesters escorted out of the town hall.
“To say you’re going to ban Muslims and make a whole race, a whole religion of people pay for the crimes of two or three or four or five..It doesn’t make sense,” Hough said.
At this point Donald Trump’s polling numbers continue to show strong results here in South Carolina.
The recent poll from Winthrop University put him having 24% of the vote. Some other recent polls showed that number growing even after he made those comments on Muslims.
