Update to our story from last night, but there’s not a lot out on it yet.

TACOMA, Wash. – Police have safely removed a suspicious device that shut down a Tacoma neighborhood and forced the evacuation of an elementary school on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators and officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined the device found at a home near East 50th Street and McKinley Avenue East was explosive. It was taken to another location to be safely detonated.

A man living at the home was arrested for investigation of unlawful possession of an explosive device.

Police were alerted to the device around 1:30 p.m. Officials then alerted the school district of the potential threat to nearby Sheridan Elementary School.

Students and staff were evacuated from the school and bused them to Boze Elementary on East 65th Street. Parents were notified to pick their children up there.

Residents had been told to stay indoors during the investigation, but have now been cleared to go outside. All streets in the area have also reopened.
