TACOMA, Wash. – An elementary school was evacuated in Tacoma as police responded Wednesday to a report of a possible explosive device.
Tacoma Public Schools spokesman Dan Voepel said police contacted school district officials at about 1:45 p.m. and notified them of a potential threat near Sheridan Elementary, located at East 54th Street and McKinley Avenue East.
Officials evacuated students and staff from the school and bused them to Boze Elementary on East 65th Street. Parents were then notified to pick their children up there.
Tacoma police are at the scene, in the vicinity of East 50th Street and McKinley Avenue, along with personnel from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Residents in the area are being advised to stay indoors as authorities try to determine whether there is an actual threat
