President Barack Obama took a jab at Donald Trump during a ceremony this afternoon celebrating the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.

The president brought up personal freedom and religion and said it’s important to remember that ‘our freedom is bound up with the freedom of others, regardless of what they look like, or where they come from, or what their last name is or what faith they practice.’

He emphasized the few words of the line and received a standing ovation for it.

It was interpreted as a rebuff to Trump over his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country, as was another remark about rejecting ‘bigotry in all its forms.’

The White House suggested it wasn’t but said Obama’s words do stand in ‘stark contrast’ to the rhetoric coming from a ‘variety’ of Republican presidential candidates.
