The California student who stabbed four people at UC Merced last week and referenced “Allah” in a manifesto found after the attack also had a printout of the ISIS flag among his belongings, according to a law enforcement official who spoke with the Merced Sun-Star on condition of anonymity on Monday.

The official told the Sun-Star that Faisal Mohammad’s manner of dress during the Nov. 4 attack and some of the websites he may have visited in the days leading up to the incident ultimately led authorities to hand control of the investigation over to campus police and the FBI. Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke confirmed that decision, saying “new information” had been discovered on Saturday about Mohammad, who was shot and killed by police during the episode.

Officials have so far dismissed terrorism as a motivating factor in the attacks, instead referencing a two-page note they said indicates the assault was sparked by Mohammad, 18, being kicked out of a study group.
