An independent commission set up by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recommended the Russian Athletics Federation be banned from the sport after finding widespread doping offenses and systematic failures in its track and field program.
The commission’s report, published on Monday, “identified systemic failures within the IAAF [International Association of Athletics Federations] and Russia” that prevent or diminish the possibility of an effective anti-doping program.
Such a ban, if adopted by the IAAF, would prevent Russian athletes taking part in any IAAF-sanctioned events such as the Olympic Games and world and European championships.
The commission’s report said the London Games were sabotaged because track’s governing body and Russia’s anti-doping authority didn’t take doping seriously enough and allowed runners to compete who should not have.
