Delta Force joined Kurdish Peshmerga forces in a rescue operation of ISIS hostages after finding out that the hostages were about to be killed. Delta Force commando Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler was killed in the ensuing firefight, the first time an American has died in combat operations against ISIS.

The hostages included locals, Iraqi security forces and ISIS members which the group believed to be spies.
