The burglary suspect who allegedly lunged with a knife at a St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputy and then stabbed a police dog died of multiple gunshot wounds after being shot by deputies. The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office said Thursday (Oct. 22) that Darien Greenwood was shot seven times.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said Greenwood rushed deputies pursuing him near a barn-like structure off Armel and Little Creek roads north of Mandeville Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 20). Greenwood allegedly tried to stab a deputy, and the police dog, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois named Thor, intervened and was stabbed in the neck and shoulder.
At that point, two deputies opened fire on Greenwood. He was brought to Lakeview Regional Medical Center near Mandeville and later airlifted to North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, where he died later Tuesday, Strain said.
The investigation into the shooting continues, and the two deputies, who haven’t been named, remain on administrative leave per the Sheriff’s Office policy, Strain said. Strain has said he does not know how many shots were fired by the deputies.
An autopsy was performed on Greenwood’s body Wednesday. James Hartman, a Coroner’s Office spokesman, said Thursday morning the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
Hartman said Greenwood had gunshot wounds to the arm, shoulder, upper back and lower chest. He also had a knife wound and multiple dog bites.
