An Air Force medic who helped thwart a terrorist attack in France is in critical condition after being repeatedly stabbed, reports said.
Spencer Stone, 22, was stabbed in Sacramento, near where he’s stationed, NBC and CBS News reported.
KCRA TV said he was attacked shortly before 1 a.m. near a popular bar area in midtown Sacramento. He was stabbed repeatedly in the torso, and investigators initially feared he wouldn’t survive, the report said.
No further details were immediately available. He was described as being in stable condition.
Stone and two other off-duty U.S. servicemen were awarded the French Legion of Honor after they stopped a would-be gunman from carrying out an attack on a Paris bound train.
Update:
His friend, fellow hero Alek Skarlatos, sent him prayers:
Skarlatos is from Roseburg and is a student at Umpqua Community College. He would have been on campus during the attack except that he was out of the area to do the Dancing With The Stars T.V. show.
Update:
Police are saying they do not believe it to be a terrorist attack, that Stone came to the aid of a friend.
Sacramento police tweeted: “The assault incident is not related to a terrorist act. Assault occurred near a bar, alcohol is believed to be a factor.”
In a positive sign, Stone’s condition has been amended to stable.
Update:
Via CBS:
Stone reportedly suffered a wound to the heart and his left lung.
The owner of a liquor store says he has video of the incident and it appears show five to six men in a group attacking someone in an intersection.
The Sacramento Police Department confirms that an assault occurred at the location in midtown just before 1 a.m. and are investigating. They would not say who was injured and a suspect has not been identified.
Update:
Here’s video of the attack. It looks like he was fighting them off until getting stabbed.
Police describing it says Stone came to the aid of a woman being harassed by men which then escalated into a fight, during which he was stabbed multiple times. Stone is now in serious, but stable condition.
According to CBS,
Police described the stabbing suspects only as two Asian male adults who were wearing white t-shirts. They reportedly left the area in a dark-grey or black 2009-2012 Toyota Camry. Police say the stabbing was not a random act, but was an incident that started in a nightclub.
