Burger King officials announced Thursday that they will team up with Denny’s, Wayback Burgers, Krystal, and Giraffas to give away 1,500 “peace day burgers” at a pop-up restaurant in Atlanta on Sept. 21.
The Peace Day campaign was launched last month when BK took out full-page ads in the Chicago Tribune and New York Times calling on McDonald’s to join them in a one-day cease-fire in their “burger wars” by collaborating to make a McWhopper (a hybrid of McDonald’s Big Mac and Burger King’s Whopper). Burger King suggested that the mashup burger could be sold to raise money to benefit Peace One Day, a non-profit organization campaigning to raise awareness of Peace Day, a United Nations recognized day that will be celebrated on Monday.
In an open letter, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook declined Burger King’s invitation, and called on the Miami-based company to acknowledge that their competition shouldn’t be compared to the “unequaled circumstances of the real pain and suffering of war.” He also suggested that Burger King officials call him next time instead of taking out
After McDonald’s declined to take part, several other national chains said they wanted to team up with Burger King. Some steel-stomached Americans also took to creating McWhoppers on their own.Burger King says the companies will give away the burgers on first-come, first-serve basis at a pop-up location near the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta. The burger will include elements of the Whopper, Denny’s Bacon Slamburger, Wayback’s Wayback Classic, Krystal’s cheese Krystal, and Giraffas’ Brutus.
