Every year there are more and more children who were not even born when the 9/11 attacks occurred.
Now an assistant principal in Zephyrhills is using her summer trip to educate first graders.“All the people on that plane they died immediately,” said Assistant principal Kathy Kaburis of Chester Taylor Elementary in Zephyrhills. Kaburis is teaching first graders about the 9/11 terror attacks.
“The second tower said something is seriously wrong,” Kaburis tells the class.
Kaburis took a summer trip to the 9/11 memorial and was so moved she knew she had to bring her experience back to her students.
“They don’t have any idea what 9/11 really means to them. They see it and talk about it, but how do they visualize it when they weren’t even born,” said Kaburis.
These six and seven-year-olds were in awe of the photos Kaburis presented and eager to learn more.
“I saw when the plane just flew and hit the building and when the building fell, I thought people weren’t in there, but when the building fell I thought all the buildings fell,” said little Kile Prine, who understands what Kaburis is teaching, but she also knows the hurt the nation felt.
“It makes me sad and when it makes me sad it makes me worry,” Kile Said.
“I think that if you really didn’t live through it to feel it. How do you understand it,” said Kaburis.
“I know how the tower knocked down, but why did they do it,” said six-year-old Trinity Hopkins, who still has questions and Kaburis says that was her entire point.
