A person was killed and a New Orleans police officer was injured while responding to a shooting Friday evening (Sept. 11), police said.
The officer was responding to shots fired in the 3900 block of Hamburg Street when he was “ambushed,” police spokesman Frank Robertson said in a news release.
The officer sustained a shoulder injury and was taken to a hospital, he said. He did not return fire, Robertson said.
The shooter or shooters fled the scene and were believed to be heading west on Interstate 10.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu told reporters he was on his way to the hospital to see the officer.
The shooting took place in the vicinity of Hamburg and Caton streets, where a male body could be seen lying on the street.
A man who lives nearby said he heard about 20 gunshots. The man, who did not want to be identified, said he went outside, saw the body and went back inside.
