Authorities have arrested a suspect in the “execution-style” shooting of a uniformed Texas sheriff’s deputy.
Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren H. Goforth, 47, was fatally shot Friday night after exiting a Houston gas station convenience store.
A suspect was arrested Saturday afternoon and will be charged, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities were scheduled to hold a 4:30 p.m. CT (5:30 p.m. ET) news conference on the arrest.
Earlier Saturday, officials said a person of interest was taken in for questioning, but was not arrested. The person was cooperating, they said, without providing additional details about his connection to the case.
In an emotional news conference Saturday afternoon, a visibly angry Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman told reporters that “dangerous rhetoric” against law enforcement had “gotten out of control.”
“We’ve heard black lives matter — all lives matter,” he said. “Well, cops’ lives matter, too.”
Update:
He has a prior criminal history, chief among the ones mentioned by Sheriff Hickman, disorderly conduct with firearm and resisting arrest. He had no prior contact that they are aware of with the Deputy he killed, the killing was ‘unprovoked’, “our assumption was he was a target because of his uniform”.
