Murders in Washington D.C. have been soaring, up 35 percent from last year. The city’s mayor, who has spent the last few months blaming all legal gun owners has finally decided to hone in on illegal guns.
The Daily Caller reported that Mayor Muriel Bowser sent a letter to city residents Wednesday offering a reward of as much as $10,000 for anyone who could come forward with information that could lead to the D.C. police recovering an illegal gun.
“Illegal firearms are responsible for most homicides in the District. And illegal guns continue to make their way into the hands of violent criminals. Our police department is making progress – but they cannot do it alone,” Bowser wrote.
The city is offering $2,500 for a tip that leads police to an illegal gun and $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction involving a shooting.
In less than nine months, the city has nearly matched the 105 murders committed during all of 2014.
