The no peace, no justice crowd keeping the racial fires burning.
Via WBTV:
One person was arrested as protesters hit the street for the second night in a row, marching for miles following the mistrial of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) officer Randall “Wes” Kerrick.
Protesters began walking through the city around 6 p.m. Saturday. At times they congregated at Marshall Park and the Transit Center. As they marched, officers worked to keep them on sidewalks and out of the streets while still allowing them to voice their concerns.
Dozens of police officers showed up at the Transit Center wearing riot gear at one point, but the cause for their arrival was unclear and they quickly left.
Police credited peace makers for diffusing some tense situations. Representatives from the Nation of Islam said they were there to do just that.
CMPD Chief Kerr Putney held a press conference earlier in the day to address the protests Friday night, which remained peaceful with the exception of two arrests, and to talk about the department’s plans for Saturday’s demonstrations.
Putney said the public would see “lots and lots” of officers around uptown on foot, bike, motorcycle and in vehicles. He said they were there to make sure the public stayed safe.
He said he encourages protesters to “get their message out, as long as they are within the law.”
