MO Student

The insanity needs to stop.

RIVERSIDE, MO (KCTV)The Confederate flag controversy has swept across the nation and a Park Hill South student is suspended after he and his friends flew the southern flag to school Thursday.

The student’s suspension brings up a gray area of freedom of speech rights on school property. The school says their policy is black and white and all students who sign a contract have to follow by the rules when parking in the school’s lot.

Whether flying the Confederate flag is offensive or personal freedom, Kasey Ayres said he and his friends didn’t mean any harm.

“I’m not trying to portray any racism or anything like that, it’s just heritage,” he said.

Ayres said his friend Kyle Becker was suspended for flying the Confederate flag. The school wouldn’t comment on why only Becker was suspended when all the friends flew one on their trucks Thursday.

“I feel like everybody should have equal rights,” Ayres said.

Legally, the school cannot confirm the suspension.

“We do have a rule that bans certain symbols from school,” said Park Hill South High School Principal Dale Longenecker.

The policy includes any symbols of hate, discrimination or drugs.
