Correction: That’s where the Democrats’ votes are…
(Examiner) — Michael Steele says he goes to Harlem because “that’s where the votes are.” Struggling RNC chairman Michael Steele was a late guest on Greta van Susteren’s On the Record last night. Steele has been in the news recently because not only did he announce his intention to run for reelection as RNC chairman, but also because many Republicans and conservatives don’t want him to return, primarily because of his sorry performance. Steele confirmed many doubts people have about him when he blurted out that he liked going to Harlem as RNC chair because “that’s where the votes are.” The weird gaffe by Steele was so blatant that even van Susteren (who Rupert Murdoch outed as being close to the Democrats) jumped in to correct him, reminding him that blacks vote almost exclusively for Democrats.
In a short interview that was meant to publicize the fact that Steele was running for reelection, Steele plotted to make himself look like a hands-on kind of chairman who likes to get his hands dirty by going into the field. Clearly, this was designed as a way to somehow hit back against critics who rightly say that he’s too inept to be the RNC chair, but instead, another weird, decidedly unconservative and seemingly oblivious misstatement poured out of Steele’s mouth.
In the first example he cited in his self-marketing as a “hands-on” kind of RNC chairman, Steele bragged that one of the first trips he took after becoming the RNC chair was to…Harlem…of all places. That would be the Harlem in New York, the Harlem with a population where almost half of everyone living there is black. While not as many blacks live in Harlem as in the past, growth has come from other minority groups like Hispanics, who also vote mostly Democrat. That Harlem.
