Same FBI that can’t find a motive for the Chattanooga Recruiting Station terrorist attack. Update to this story.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a new statement that seeks to address media reports that military personnel and their families have been targeted by Middle Eastern men here and in northern Colorado.
The statement was issued late Thursday afternoon. It says the FBI in Denver has “found no credible threats to military personnel or their family members in Colorado or Wyoming.
“The FBI continues to coordinate with its military and law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of our communities,” the release continued. “The FBI asks the community to remain vigilant and report signs of suspicious activity to law enforcement.”
The timing of the release comes just a day after numerous media outlets along the Front Range, including the WTE, reported on an alert the Denver FBI sent to military and local law enforcement on July 2.
Dubbed a “situational information report,” the alert said that in May the wife of a U.S. military member was approached at her home by two Middle Eastern males.
The men said the woman was the wife of a U.S. interrogator, according to the alert. When the woman denied that claim, the men laughed and then left in a dark-colored four-door sedan with two other Middle Eastern men.
The report added that similar incidents were reported in Wyoming through the month of June, with Middle Eastern men trying to get personal information about military members and family members “through intimidation.”
On Friday, Special Agent Amy Sanders with the Denver FBI said due to policy she could not speak to the veracity of the July 2 alert.
She also said she is not permitted to either confirm nor deny whether there is an investigation into the matter.
But F.E. Warren Air Force Base effectively confirmed the existence of the alert on Aug. 5 when it posted a “heads up” on its Facebook page. That included some of the same details as the FBI alert and asked the public to report any suspicious individuals to local law enforcement.
