The Democratic Party unveiled its presidential primary debate schedule Thursday, and it includes a Jan. 17 debate in Charleston to be aired on NBC.
The first debate will air Oct. 13 on CNN from Nevada, with others set for Nov. 14 and Dec. 19 in Iowa and New Hampshire, respectively.
South Carolina has the party’s first-in-the-South primary, and state party leaders chose Charleston for the debate site partly because of recent events here, said Jaime Harrison, chairman of the S.C. Democratic Party.
Those incidents — which made national headlines — included a North Charleston police officer’s videotaped shooting of a fleeing black man and the June 17 killings of nine people inside Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.
“Given all the events that have taken place in Charleston, for many folks it just seemed to be appropriate,” Harrison said, adding U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., also weighed in on the debate site. The Congressional Black Caucus Institute is a partner for the Charleston debate, which will be held on the Monday of Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
