Stop the world, I need to get off.

Tuesday night’s Newton County Commission meeting is expected to be packed with people calling for the resignation of Commissioner John Douglas.

Douglas told FOX 5 he plans to talk about some racially charged remarks he made on Facebook.

Douglas has been under fire for making the racially derogatory remarks in reaction to a photo of a woman wiping her behind with the American flag.

He has apologized for his language and called the comments “insensitive and derogatory.” However, the retired Army veteran also said he was “coming to the defense of our flag.”

Sorry is not enough for some in Newton County; wanting Douglas to resign. Meanwhile, others at VFW Post 5290 in Newton felt the whole incident was overblown.

But Post Commander William Mitiu has a different view saying Douglas was out of line.

“Whether it’s an opinion we like or not that’s one of the rights we defended so she could do that,” said Mitiu.

Mitiu said two wrongs don’t make a right.

“Obviously what she did was wrong and heinous and disrespectful but as military veterans and especially here as combat veterans the unfortunate reality is the rights we are defending is also her right to freedom of speech as well as that’s something we always have to be mindful of,” said Mitiu.

Douglas has said he does not plan to step down.

Several groups have announced their intention to make their position known at Tuesday night’s Board of Commissioners’ meeting, which starts at 7:00 p.m.
