Help will soon be on the way for Indianapolis’ low-income communities losing their Double 8 Foods grocery stores.

After 58 years, the local grocery chain announced this week it would be closing its doors. The stores’ owners said they had experienced a double-digit loss of revenue and just could not continue to keep them open.

It was a difficult decision, owners said, because their employees and customers have become like family to them.

It was also difficult news for the neighborhoods they served, many of which will now be without any nearby options for fresh produce and groceries.

On Saturday, local churches announced they would be stepping up to offer transportation to grocery stores for people who need it.

For residents of the United Northwest Area, Rev. Charles Harrison said church vans would be offering rides to grocery stores beginning Monday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The vans will leave from the Double 8 grocery store at the intersection of 29th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
