Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards apologized for the lack of compassion portrayed by an executive in an undercover video but continued to refute claims that the organization is profiting from fetal tissue donation.

Richards spoke in a new video released by the organization on Thursday. This was the first time the organization had addressed the tone of the comments publicly.

“Our top priority is the compassionate care that we provide. In the video one of our staff members speaks in a way that does not reflect that compassion, this is unacceptable and I personally apologize for the staff member’s tone and statements,” Richards said.

The original undercover video was released by an anti-abortion advocacy group earlier this week. The video, which Planned Parenthood has called “heavily edited,” shows Senior Director of Medical Services Dr. Deborah Nucatola, discussing the organization’s process to donate fetal tissue, as she is shown eating a salad and drinking wine.

The people asking Nucatola questions, posing as potential buyers, ask her a price range per specimen.

“You know, I would throw a number out, I would say it’s probably anywhere from $30 to $100, depending on the facility and what’s involved,” Nucatola says.

Richards said in her video statement on Thursday, “Recently an organization that opposes safe and legal abortion used secretly recorded, heavily edited videos to make outrageous claims about programs that help women donate fetal tissue for medical research. I want to be really clear, the allegation that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation is not true.”
