A newly-elected Sarasota city commissioner is asking Equality Florida to remove her original survey response regarding same sex marriage and abortion rights.

Commissioner Shelli Freeland Eddie checked “yes” in support of same sex marriage and abortion rights.

“I answered the questions from a legal perspective making sure as a lawyer I protect those rights,” she says.

Eddie also wrote an explanation to her answer on marriage equality. But in a letter to Equality Florida Action Pac dated June 29, three days after the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, she asked those answers be removed. Equality Florida endorsed Eddie, in part, based on her survey answers.

Eddie says she wanted to clarify her political/professional position does not match her personal position. Eddie says based on her faith she believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

Equality Florida endorsed Eddie in part based on her survey answers.

Equality Florida Institute Chairman Ken Shelin says Eddie deceived her supporters.
