Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Sunday that the Confederate flag is now an obstacle for lasting harmony in South Carolina.
“I see it as a roadblock for South Carolina,” he told host Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“My state will never be able to move forward after this shooting until we take this flag down,” the 2016 GOP presidential candidate added.
Graham’s remarks follow a mass shooting that claimed nine lives in Charleston, S.C.
Dylann Storm Roof, the alleged gunman, reportedly displayed the Confederate flag on his car’s license plate.
Graham refused comment Sunday on whether the emblem represents racial hatred or cultural heritage.
“Put it in a museum and look at it anyway you’d like,” he said. “It’s got to come down.”
Graham praised his constituents for peacefully discussing the controversial symbol without any additional violence.
“This is a case where the people led the politicians,” Graham said of debate over the issue.
Graham initially defended displaying the Confederate flag as a decision for his state’s voters.
